Security Risks when using Bluetooth Technology

According to the National Cyber Alert System, Bluetooth technology may introduce security risks.

As you know, many electronic devices are now equipped with Bluetooth technology which allows wireless communication with other Bluetooth devices. Some examples include headsets, keyboards, and create wireless communication between devices.  This communication is accomplished through specific configurations with the electronic devices that allow for interaction with other devices who contain the same Bluetooth technology features.

Since Bluetooth technology establishes radio frequencies, a required distance range between the two devices is required.   Because of this, an attacker may possibly “discover” your Bluetooth which opens your device’s up to being compromised.

In order to minimize security concerns, please follow the guidelines below for best practice:

• Disable Bluetooth unless it is vitally necessary.
• Make your device “hidden” as opposed to “discoverable”.
• Check Bluetooth and security settings often.
• Beware of using Bluetooth in a public place or with a public network, and always keep an eye on your surroundings.
• Never share your Bluetooth pairing code with others.

Ask your IT department if there are steps you can take to encrypt your device(s) from any possible risk associated with Bluetooth.
